Mary Washington Sweeps Men's And Women's Tennis Wins; Both Eagles Teams Advance To NCAA Third Round

Mary Washington's men's team battled to a 5-4 victory over Washington & Lee, followed by the Eagles' seventh-ranked women's team posting a 5-1 win over Methodist, to both advance to Sunday's third round of the 2008 NCAA championship tournaments.
In the men's action, the Eagles opened with a win
from Randy Loden and Kaz Murata at one doubles, but the Generals
won at two, 9-7, and three, 8-6, to take a 2-1 lead into singles
play. The Generals upped the team lead to 3-1 with a win at six
singles.
UMW answered with straight set wins from Randy Loden at two (6-2,
6-3) and Jason Dunn at three (6-0, 6-2) to tie the team score at
three. After Eddie Carver won at four, 6-4, 6-3, the Generals tied
the team score at four with a 6-4, 2-6, 7-6(3) win at five.
The last match on the courts was at one singles, where John James
defeated Tim Ross, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, for the clincher.
Eagles improve to 21-6 on the season, and will host fourth ranked Trinity University (Texas) on Sunday at noon, with the winner advancing to the NCAA National Championship event. The Eagles fell to the Tigers, 7-2, at the ITA Indoor Nationals in February.
In the women's match, the Eagles led, 2-1, after doubles, as
Megan Lawlor and Kate Malpeli won, 8-6, at two, and Courtney
Goimarac and Stephanie Kurti won the three, 8-0.
In singles, Amy Sheetz won at six singles, 6-0, 6-0, Malpeli won at
five, 6-0, 6-1, and Becky Morse-Karzen won at one, 6-1, 6-3. The
remainder of the matches were abandoned upon the clinching of the
team score.
The Eagles improve to 22-3 overall and move on to face Johns Hopkins, with the winner advancing to the NCAA National Championships. The Eagles defeated Johns Hopkins, 6-3, this year.
