Mary Washington Tops Salisbury, 8-1, For 2008 CAC Women's Tennis Championship

The seventh-ranked University of Mary Washington women's tennis team (20-3) won its fifth straight Capital Athletic Conference crown, and 16th overall, with an 8-1 win over Salisbury University in the 2008 conference championship on Saturday.

The Eagles won at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles to take a 2-1 lead into singles play.  UMW then swept the six singles matches in straight sets. 

Kate Malpeli captured the No. 4 singles match by a 6-2, 6-0 margin, while Jessica Armes won at No. 6 singles, also surrendering only two games in the match, both in the second set, to lead the winners.  Malepi also teamed with Megan Lawlor to post a shutout in doubles play.

Courtney Goimarac was nearly as formidable for the Eagles at No. 3 singles, posting a 6-3, 6-0 triumph.  Becky Morse-Karzen and Amy Sheetz also gained straight-sets singles wins, losing only four games in their respective matches.

Salisbury (16-5) registered its lone team point at No. 1 doubles when Kelly Fahrner and Rachel Iosue gained an 8-5 decision.
