November 4, 2009 Mary Washington Advances In A Shootout To CAC Women's Soccer Championship Match Against Stevenson

A pair of non-starters for the fourth-seeded Mary Washington - freshman defender Lilly Briedis-Ruiz and junior forward Chrissy Reardon - converted their shootout attempts to lift the Eagles into the 2009 CAC Women's Soccer Championship Game Saturday at Stevenson.

UMW (13-4-3) and top-seeded Salisbury (10-4-2) played to a scoreless draw for 110 minutes in regulation and overtime, sending the teams to a shootout.  Briedis-Ruiz scored on the Eagles' first attempt, and Reardon gave the visitors the insurmountable advantage by hitting the fourth try.  Salisbury came up empty on its four shots.

Second-seeded Stevenson (14-3-1) earned home field advantage in the title match with a 3-2 victory over third-seeded York (14-5-1).  Sophomore Stephanie Eyler knocked home two first-half shots to give the Mustangs the lead, and Samantha Novy found the back of the net with what proved to be the game-winner with 20 minutes left in the match.

Eyler, the 2008 CAC Rookie of the Year, raised her CAC-leading scoring total to 19 games.  Stevenson, the regular-season co-champion, will play in the title match for the first time since joining the CAC in 2007.

Just 24 hours earlier, the Stevenson men's soccer team upset top-seeded Salisbury by a 1-0 count to advance to Saturday's men's championship game Saturday at York.  That gives Stevenson two chances Saturday to claim its first team title in any sport since joining the CAC.

Mary Washington has won 12 CAC women's soccer crowns, the most recent in 2004 that ended a four-year championship run by the Eagles.

The Mustangs, who are regionally ranked this season for the first time in team history, needed overtime on Oct. 24 to secure a 3-2 victory over UMW in the regular-season meeting between the two squads.

The CAC playoff champion earns an automatic bid to the 2009 NCAA Championship Tournament.
