St. Mary's, Stevenson And 11 CAC Players Honored By IWLCA For Academic Success

St. Mary's College of Maryland and Stevenson University (formerly Villa Julie College) were honored for team academic success, and 11 CAC players were honored individually, by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).

St. Mary's (15-6), which finished second in the CAC regular-season standings, advanced to the conference championship game and was selected to participate in the NCAA Tournament, and Stevenson (12-5), which finished fifth in the eight-team conference standings, were among 56 NCAA Division III programs to boast a 3.0 team grade point average.

Stevenson also had three individuals among the 11 players from the conference honored for recording a 3.20 or better GPA, including senior Catherine Connelly and juniors Julie Olson and Jess Dixon.  Only juniors and seniors are eligible for the individual recognition.

Senior Sue Ackerman, the CAC Player of the Year and Women's Scholar-Athlete of the Year, joined junior Jessica Chmielewski in representing conference champion and NCAA semifinalist Salisbury University among the 172 players honors in NCAA Division III.

The University of Mary Washington, Wesley College and York College of Pa. each had two players named to the 2008 Division III IWLCA Academic Honor Roll.

Juniors Julie Milner and Emily Gallugi represented the third-place Mary Washington Eagles (10-8).  Senior Nicole Starner and junior Carla Thomas earned a berth on the Academic Honor Roll from fourth-place York (11-6).  Wesley (5-11) placed juniors Mary Rebecca Kreps and Leslie Cervenka on the list of Division III national academic leaders.
