Sue Ackerman Leads The Offense And Sonja Stuart Leads The Defense As Top-Seeded Salisbury Wins 2008 Women's Lacrosse Title
Salisbury senior Sue Ackerman scored a game-high eight points on five goals and three assists, and junior goalie Sonja Stuart kept the St. Mary's offense in check as they combined to lead the top-seeded Sea Gulls (20-0) to an 18-7 victory over the second-seeded Seahawks (13-5) in the 2008 CAC Women's Lacrosse Championship Game.
The Sea Gulls, the No. 1-ranked team in the country, captured its sixth-straight CAC crown, all under head coach Jim Nestor, and eighth team title for SU in the last nine years.
Ackerman scored the first two goals of the game and finished the first half with three goals and an assist, helping the Sea Gulls take an 8-2 lead to the break. Kim Cudmore and Beth Rhodey also scored twice in the opening 30 minutes for SU.
Stuart and the Salisbury defense keyed the six-goal haftime lead by recording nine saves on 13 SMC shots. Stuart finished the game with 13 stops, equaling her career high that was set in a 14-11 triumph against Mary Washington in the 2007 CAC Championship Game.
St. Mary's sophomore Kelsey Branch scored twice in the first two minutes of the second half to give the visitors momentum. The teams traded two goals each over the next five minutes before Ackerman started a seven-goal run for the Sea Gulls to pull away for the victory.
Ackerman raised her season total to 131 points (70 G, 61 A), equaling SU's team record for most points in a season, helping the Sea Gulls break the team record for most wins in a regular season.
