Both Top-Ranked Salisbury Lacrosse Teams Remain Unbeaten In CAC Play
The Salisbury men's lacrosse team survived a trip to Owings Mills and joined the SU women's lacrosse team, both ranked No. 1 in NCAA Division III, in the undefeated ranks in CAC play and sitting atop the 2008 conference standings heading into the home stretch of the regular season.
The Sea Gulls men (13-0, 6-0 CAC) led Villa Julie 6-0 at the end of the first quarter, then had to score four of the last five goals of the game in the fourth quarter to gain a 13-12 victory in front of more than 1,000 enthusiastic fans.
The host Mustangs (8-3, 4-1 CAC) went on two key scoring runs, registering all six goals in the second quarter to send the teams to the halftime break tied at 6-6. After SU scored the first two goals of the second half, VJ put together a 5-1 streak to take an 11-9 lead early in the fourth quarter before the visiting Gulls battled back to gain the victory.
It was the most goals allowed in a game by SU since suffering a 13-12 setback to Cortland State in the 2006 NCAA Division III Championship Game. The Gulls did not allow an opponent to score more than nine goals on the way to winning the 2007 national title, and the most goals allowed this season was 10 in victories over Ohio Wesleyan (14-10) and St. Lawrence (11-10).
SU clinched at least a tie for first place in the men's standings and will close out the regular season April 12 with a home game against second place St. Mary's (7-5, 5-1 CAC), which gained a 9-5 triumph against Wesley Saturday to stay in the running for the top seed in the 2008 CAC tournament, which begins April 14.
On the women's side, Salisbury posted an 18-11 triumph at St. Mary's to improve to 15-0 overall, 6-0 in the CAC, the first conference loss of the season for the Seahawks (8-4, 4-1).
Meanwhile, Mary Washington (9-5), also undefeated in CAC play (5-0) gained an 18-5 non-conference triumph over Greensboro. The Eagles have to face both St. Mary's (4/12) and Salisbury (4/17) prior to the beginning of the 2008 CAC Championship Tournament, which begins April 20.
