Mary Washington Men's Tennis Upsets Trinity, Texas, To Join UMW Women's Tennis In 2008 NCAA Div. III Elite 8

The 13th-ranked Mary Washington men's tennis team rallied to upset fourth-ranked Trinity, Texas, and will advance with the seventh-ranked UMW women's tennis team in the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Division III Championship Tournament March 13.
In the men's third-round match, Mary Washington overcame a 4-1 deficit to knock off fourth ranked Trinity (Tx.) University, 504, on Sunday in the third round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at the Battleground.
The Eagles fell behind, 2-1 after doubles. After Randy Loden and
Kaz Murata won at one doubles, 8-6, Trinity won at three, 8-6. UMW
then dropped a 9-7 decision at two doubles to fall into a 2-1 hole
entering doubles.
Trinity won at five and six singles to take a 4-1 advantage in the
team match. Then, Eddie Carver won in three sets at four, 1-6, 6-3,
6-0, and John James won in three sets at one, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1 to move
the team score to 4-3.
Jason Dunn was the third Eagle to overcome a first set loss to win
in three sets at three, 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, and then All-America junior
Randy Loden clinched the improbable comeback with a 7-5, 7-6 (3)
win at two singles.
UMW (22-6) ties the school record with its 22nd win of the season,
and will face either Middlebury College or Trinity (Ct.) College on
May 13 at Bates College in the team's first trip to the final eight
in four years.
On the women's side, The University of Mary Washington women's
tennis team defeated Johns Hopkins University, 5-4. The Eagles,
23-3 on the season, advance to the NCAA Division III National
Championships event as a team for the first time since 1993.
The Eagles led, 2-1, after doubles, as Becky Morse-Karzen and
Natalia Fugate won at one, 8-4, and Megan Lawlor and Kate Maleli
won at two, 8-4. The Eagles fell behind, 7-2, at three, and battled
back to 8-7 before falling, 9-7.
In singles play, Kate Malpeli won at five, 6-1, 6-0, before Hopkins
won at six to move the team score to 3-2. Eagle junior Becky
Morse-Karzen won at one, 6-3, 6-2, to move the team score to 4-2,
and Natalia Fugate, the lone senior in the lineup, won at four,
7-5, 6-3, for the clincher.
The Eagles will play the winner of Williams and Wellesley in the
national quarterfinals at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota on
May 13.
