  • CNU Announces Hiring of Justin Chezem as Head Men's Soccer Coach
    December 11, 2018
    Following the retirement of Steve Shaw on Monday, Christopher Newport University has named Justin Chezem as head men's soccer coach. Director of Athletics Kyle McMullin announced the elevation of the Captains' long-time assistant coach after Chezem has helped lead CNU men's soccer for the last 12 seasons.

    Postseason awards continue to roll in for a pair of Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) soccer standouts. Washington Mary senior Justin Carey and Christopher Newport senior Gabby Gillis were named to the United Soccer Coaches 2018 Scholar All-America First Team, announced on Monday (Dec. 10).
  • Seven CAC Soccer Programs Honored as Team Academic Award Recipients

    Seven Capital Athletic Conference (CAC) men's and women's soccer programs were recently recognized by the United Soccer Coaches as 2017-18 College Team Academic Award winners. To be recognized with this distinction, a team must post a grade point average of 3.0 or greater.
  • Kilby, UMW Men's Soccer Staff Named South Atlantic Region Staff of the Year by United Soccer Coaches

    United Soccer Coaches has named University of Mary Washington men's soccer head coach Jason Kilby and his staff as the 2018 South Atlantic Region Staff of the Year.  The Eagles finished the season with a 14-1-5 overall record, captured the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference championship, were ranked all season in the top 20, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. The Eagles rank second in the nation in save percentage (.909), fourth in team goals-against average (.380), and sixth in shutout percentage (.650). UMW set a school record for fewest losses in a season, as well as fewest goals allowed.
  • Mary Washington's Carey and St. Mary's Balogun Collect United Soccer Coaches All-America Honors

    Mary Washington senior Justin Carey and St. Mary's junior Khalid Balogun received All-America honors from the United Soccer Coaches. Carey was named a first-team All-American, while Balogun collected second-team accolades. 
  • Eight CAC Standouts Earn United Soccer Coaches All-South Atlantic Region Recognition

    Eight Capital Athletic Conference men's soccer players have been named to the United Soccer Coaches All-South Atlantic Region Team, announced by organized on Monday evening. Mary Washington earned a conference-leading four spots in the all-region squad, while St. Mary's had two players honored, with Salisbury and York both represented by one all-region honoree.

    Top-seeded Mary Washington scored in the 59th minute on its way to a 1-0 victory over second-seeded St. Mary's in the CAC men's soccer championship on Saturday at the Battleground Athletic Complex in Fredericksburg, Va. The win is the Eagles second-straight conference crown and 10th overall, most in league history. j

  • CAC Players of the Week - Oct. 29

    Last week's action marked the conclusion of the regular season and the opening of CAC postseason play in field hockey, men's soccer, and women's soccer. The CAC volleyball tournament will begin on Tuesday, with the other fall sports continuing postseason competition this week, culminating in the championship games this Saturday, Nov. 3.

  • Mary Washington Claims Top Seed in CAC Men's Soccer Tournament; Postseason Matchups Finalized

    Defending champion Mary Washington secured the top seed and homefield advantage on the final day of the CAC men's soccer regular season on Wednesday. The Eagles defeated Southern Virginia 10-0 to lock up the CAC regular season title. The 2018 CAC Men's Soccer Tournament will feature all eight CAC squads in the postseason.

This week's weekly awards were collected by Dana Meehling and Sam Keating of York field hockey, Matt Mackenzie of Salisbury men's soccer, Patrick Paolini of St. Mary's men's soccer, Riley Cook of Christopher Newport women's soccer, Kelcie Macomber of Mary Washington women's soccer, and Riley Garrison of Christopher Newport volleyball. Cook, Macomber, and Garrison each earned weekly honors for the second week in a row.

    Capital Athletic Conference play is now in full swing for all of the fall conference sports, with this week's weekly honors awarded to Tara Daddio of Salisbury field hockey, Olivia Davis of Christopher Newport field hockey, Justin Carey of Mary Washington men's soccer, Blake Gaetz of Frostburg State men's soccer, Riley Cook of Christopher Newport women's soccer, Kelcie Macomber of Mary Washington women's soccer, and Riley Garrison of Christopher Newport volleyball. Davis, Carey, and Cook are repeat award winners this fall.

     The final week of September featured the opening of conference play in soccer and field hockey, while volleyball entered its second week of CAC competition. Weekly honors were collected by Julea Truskey of York field hockey, Olivia Davis of Christopher Newport field hockey, Isaac Ekobo of St. Mary's men's soccer, Billy Bridegum of York men's soccer, Katie Flores and Alex Moody of St. Mary's women's soccer, and Josie Lucernoni of Christopher Newport volleyball.

    Week four of the fall 2018 season witnessed the opening of CAC volleyball action while field hockey and soccer remain in non-conference play as the first month of fall competition wraps up this week. Weekly honors were garned by Lauren Hopkins of Mary Washington field hockey, Meghan Ronan of St. Mary's field hockey, Ethan Hoover of Penn State Harrisburg men's soccer, Ken Kurtz of Mary Washington men's soccer, Lindsey Hendrickson of Mary Washington women's soccer, Haley Eiser of Christopher Newport women's soccer, and Hailey Lohnes of Southern Virginia volleyball.

    Week three of the fall 2018 season was marred by the threat of Hurricane Florence, with several CAC institutions closing their campuses and numerous game cancellations and postponements throughout the Mid-Atlantic Region. Many contests went on as planned, however, with weekly honors awarded to Lauren Hopkins of Mary Washington field hockey, Domanique Farrace of Salisbury field hockey, Madison Hemler of Penn State Harrisburg women's soccer, Regan Benton of Salisbury women's soccer, Joey Aman of Penn State Harrisburg men's soccer, Trevor Brookhart of Salisbury men's soccer, and Madyson Whitcomb of York volleyball.

  • Christopher Newport Edges Mary Washington for Top Spot in CAC Men's Soccer Preseason Poll

    Christopher Newport edged out Mary Washington by one point to earn the title of preseason favorite in the 2018 Capital Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Preseason Poll. The Captains, who finished the 2017 season as the regular season champion and tournament runner-up, secured three first-place votes and totaled 45 points to take the top spot in the voting.
