Tyler Reid exploded for five goals and led fifth-ranked Stevenson to a 13-2 victory over Birmingham Southern in Wednesday's opening round of the 2012 NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship Tournament.
The Mustangs (16-4) advance to Saturday's second round, where they'll host 20th-ranked Gettysburg (11-6). The starting time for the game is TBA.
Also Saturday, top-seeded and defending national champion Salisbury (18-0) returns to action with a second-round game against Goucher (18-1), beginning at 7 p.m.
Wednesday night at Mustang Stadium, Birmingham Southern's Erik Klein scored the first goal of the game, off a Jacob McPherson assist, just 2:27 into the contest. BSU was then held scoreless by the host Mustangs for 36 minutes until McPherson scored the team's only other goal (unassisted with just over five minutes left in the third quarter.
Between BSU goals, Stevenson exploded for 10-straight scores. Reid started the run with his 21st goal of the season off an assist from Kenny Whittaker just 35 seconds lafter Klein's goal to even the score at 1-1.
Reid scored three more goals in the first half while J.P. Coombe added both of his scores as the Mustangs took a 9-1 lead to the locker room at the break. Billy Burgoyne also scored twice for the winners.
Stevenson outshot the visitors by a 45-26 margin and won 13 of 18 faceoffs.
