Salisbury Men And Women, Along With St. Mary's Women, Gain NCAA Div. III Lacrosse Championship Bids
The defending NCAA champion Salisbury men's lacrosse team and the 2007 runner-up SU women's lacrosse team, along with 2008 CAC women's lacrosse runner-up St. Mary's College, were selected to compete in this year's respective national championship tournaments Sunday.
In the women's tournament, Salisbury and St. Mary's could meet for a third time this season if the Seahawks survive a May 7 opening-round battle at home against Fairleigh Dickinson-Florham.
St. Mary's, which dropped 18-11 (4/5 at SMC) and 18-7 (4/25 in the CAC title contest at SU) decisions this season to the top-ranked Sea Gulls. The Seahawks are 14-5 heading into Wednesday's match against FDU-Florham (16-2).
The SU women's team finished second in the 2007 NCAA title chase, losing the championship game to Franklin & Marshall College. Coach Jim Nestor's crew will take a 20-0 record into this year's tournament.
In the men's tournament, Salisbury will open defense of its 2007 NCAA title at home on May 10 against the winner of a first-round match pitting Kenyon (10-3) and Ohio Wesleyan (9-6). SU (18-0) downed Ohio Wesleyan by a 14-10 margin on March 9.
If the Sea Gulls advance, the quarterfinal-round opponent would be the winner of a second-round clash between Cabrini and Haverford. SU would need to win three times to advance to the 2008 NCAA Championship Game, scheduled for Sunday, May 25, at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. (1:30 p.m. on CSTV).
