Berkman Breaks All-Time Coaching Record As Salisbury Men's Lacrosse Tops Ohio Wesleyan In NCAA Tournament
Saturday's 13-5 men's lacrosse victory over Ohio Wesleyan not only advanced Salisbury to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Tournament, but it lifted head coach Jim Berkman to the No. 1 position in all-time victories in his profession.
The No. 1-ranked Sea Gulls improved to 19-0 for the season by using a 5-1 advantage in the second quarter, then pulling away by scoring four of the five goals in the fourth quarter, for the eight-goal victory over OWU.
Matt Hickman was the scoring leader for SU with four goals and one assist for five points. Bruce Richardson added four goals, Jake DeLillo chipped in three, and coach Berkman's son Kylor dished out a game-high four assists.
The victory advanced SU into Wednesday's (5/14) national quarterfinals, where the Sea Gulls will face 6th-ranked Cabrini College. Time and location of Wednesday's Elite Eight game have not been announced. Cabrini advanced with a 13-10 decision over Haverford College Saturday.
But prior to Wednesday's game, the Sea Gulls will be celebrating the milestone win for coach Berkman. His 327th career win (against just 35 losses) is one more than long-time Army head coach Jack Emmer. Berkman's record includes one season at Potsdam State.
Berkman is in his 20th season at the helm of the defending NCAA Division III champion Sea Gulls. SU's 2007 crown was the 7th in team history. The Sea Gulls have never lost a Capital Athletic Conference game since it joined the league in 1995. Salisbury has won 14 consecutive CAC championships and boasts a 100-0 conference record (including CAC tournament games).
Salisbury has several national winning streaks in tact. SU has not lost a regular-season game in six years (81 straight games) and are 72-0 at home since April 10, 2003. SU's win against OWU was it's 42nd-straight triumph.
