November 4, 2009 Top Two Seeds - Salisbury And Mary Washington - Post 2-1 Semifinal Wins To Advance To 2009 CAC Field Hockey Championship

Salisbury's Kristina Fusco and Mary Washington's Emma Jones scored second-half game-winning goals of their respective contests Wednesday to lift the top two seeds in the 2009 CAC Field Hockey tournament into Saturday's championship game.

Fusco broke a 1-1 tie with a penalty stroke at 49:01 to lift top-seeded Salisbury (15-1) to the victory over fourth-seeded Wesley (12-9).  The Sea Gulls are ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III and riding a nine-game win streak.

In the other semifinal, Jones and sophomore teammate Erin Duffy, each had a goal and an assist in a 2-1 Mary Washington (12-7) victory over third-seeded York (14-8).  The Eagles and Spartans tied for second place during the regular season, but UMW gained home field advantage in the playoffs with a 2-1 regular-season win over the Spartans.

Salisbury will be aiming for its 15th-straight CAC title.  During that span, the Sea Gulls have lost just four games against CAC foes and are undefeated in CAC play over the past three seasons.

Mary Washington won three CAC titles from 1991-93 and have appeared in the conference championship game seven times between 1997 and 2004.

Salisbury posted a 3-0 victory at Mary Washington on Oct. 25 during the regular-season meeting of the two teams.

The winner of the championship game gains the CAC's first-ever NCAA Tournament automatic bid.
