November 1, 2009 Wesley Wins In OT, Advances With York To The CAC Field Hockey Semifinals

Wesley sophomore Sheree Pleasanton scored the game-winning goal three minutes into overtime to lift the fourth-seeded Wolverines to a 3-2 win over fifth-seeded St. Mary's Sunday in the first round of the 2009 CAC field hockey playoffs.

Wesley advances to the second round with third-seeded York, which held off sixth-seeded Stevenson in the second half of their first-round contest for a 2-1 victory.  Brittany Simmons had a goal and an assist, both in the first half, for the hosts.

The CAC semifinals on Wednesday feature the Battle of the Peninsula in one contest while the North travels to the South in the other contest.

Top-seeded Salisbury (14-1), the No. 2-ranked team in the country and 14-time defending conference champion, will host fourth-seeded Wesley (12-8).  The Sea Gulls downed the Wolverines by a 2-1 margin during the regular season.

In the other semifinal, second-seeded Mary Washington (11-7) will host third-seeded York (13-8).  The teams tied for second place in the regular season, but UMW earned the higher seed based on a 2-1 victory over the Spartans early in the campaign.

The CAC Championship game is scheduled for Nov. 7 at the home field of the highest-seeded team.
