November 25, 2009 Salisbury's Tara McGovern And Lauren Correll Named To Field Hockey All-America Team

The Salisbury University field hockey team collected its fifth national championship on Sunday afternoon, and Tuesday more good news came rolling in as the program was honored with two Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-American selections.

Sophomore back Tara McGovern was selected to the first team and senior forward Lauren Correll was named to the third team, marking the 29th consecutive season that at least one Sea Gull has been selected as an All-American.

McGovern was one of just three sophomores named to the first team this year. She played a key role in Salisbury's defense being one of the best in the nation. She started all 21 games for the Sea Gulls, contributing to the Sea Gulls' ability to limit opponents to 0.52 goals per game. The 2009 season was one of the most successful defensively for Salisbury in the program's history. The 0.52 goals allowed average was second-lowest in program history, having allowed just 0.38 during the 1997 season. Thirteen shutouts in 2009 also was the second-best total in program history, coming up one short of the title team in 1986.

Correll, who was named a second-team All-American in 2007 and third-team All-American last year, is just the ninth Sea Gull to be selected as an All-American at least three times. The senior was the leading scorer for the Sea Gulls in 2009, closing out her career with a 20-goal season to go with eight assists. Her 20 goals stands tied for the 14th-best single-season performance in program history. Correll ended her career with 78 goals and 178 points, both totals put her second in program history.
