UMW's Lee Rubin and Kevin Foeman Together Again in Pro Baseball
BROCKTON, Mass. - Lee Rubin and Kevin Foeman, teammates for four seasons at the University of Mary Washington, are together again, playing professional baseball for the Brockton (Mass.) Rox of the independent Can-Am League.
Rubin, a catcher from West Orange, N.J., has played the entire 2007 season with the Rox, playing in 40 games with a .230 average, one home run, and 17 RBI. Foeman, who began the year in spring training with the San Francisco Giants, recently joined the club, and has appeared in eight games, allowing 13 earned runs and striking out eight batters.
"Both Lee and Kevin were a huge part of the success that we enjoyed while they were at UMW," said head coach Tom Sheridan. "It's so rare that division III players get the opportunity to play professional baseball, and as their college coach, it's extremely gratifying for me to see them get the opportunity to play on the next level, and that as teammates once again."
The pair was integral for the 2005 CAC Championship team at UMW, as Rubin batted .410 with 4 homers and 42 RBI, and Foeman went 10-3 with a 1.93 ERA with nine complete games en route to All-America honors. Both played in three NCAA Tournaments for the Eagles, in 2003-05.
The UMW baseball connection in Brockton goes one step farther - Foeman and Rubin's host family for the season is Dan and Nina Murphy, the parents of former Eagle outfielder Mike Murphy.
