35-Game Win Streak Snaps, But Salisbury Baseball Wins Third-Straight CAC Crown

Second baseman Randy Boyle was one of four Salisbury players to rip three hits, including a pair of homers, and helped the Sea Gulls post a 20-5 victory over Mary Washington to win the 2008 CAC Baseball Championship.

The top-seeded Sea Gulls (36-2) had a 35-game win streak snapped in the first game of Sunday's championship DH when second-seeded UMW (24-12) erased a six-run deficit with seven runs in the seventh and one in the bottom of the ninth for a 16-15 victory.

But SU bounced back in the nightcap, scoring eight runs in the third and seven runs in the seventh, on the way to the team's third-straight conference crown.  Salisbury has won seven CAC championships in the last nine years, six under head coach Doug Fleetwood.

In the opening slugfest, Salisbury scored five runs in the fourth, three in the fifth and three in the seventh to open up a 14-8 advantage.  Mary Washington bounced back with seven runs in the bottom of the seventh for a one-run lead.

SU, trying to extend its win streak that dated back to the second game of the season, evened the score in the top of ninth, only to see UMW's senior OF John Sims hit a lead-off homer in the bottom of the ninth to keep the Eagles' championship hopes alive.

In the nightcap, SU starter Eric Willey held the Eagles scoreless on the way to improving to 8-0 for the season.  The Sea Gulls' offense, meanwhile, pounded out 19 hits, drew eight walks and took advantage of two UMW errors to post the win and secure the title.
