Marymount University’s athletics department announced its
year-end awards at its annual student-athlete recognition banquet
on Sunday afternoon. Junior men’s golfer Peter Johns was
named Male Athlete of the Year while junior women’s
basketball player Katelyn Fischer and senior women’s swimmer
Anna Macedonia were named Co-Female Athletes of the Year.
On the academic side, Fischer was also named the Linda McMahon
Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year while junior men’s golfer
Nick Ryerson garnered Linda McMahon Male Scholar Athlete of the
Year honors. Senior women’s basketball player Julie
Tomesheski was honored with the James Shelton Award.
Male and Female Athlete of the Year Awards
Peter Johns, Sr., Men’s Golf
Johns helped lead his program to one of the best seasons in MU
history. He was named Second Team All-CAC for the third
consecutive year after posting a 78.5 stroke average and tying for
6th at the CAC Golf Championships. Johns also posted five
top-10 finishes in tournaments on the year.
Katelyn Fischer, Jr., Women’s Basketball
Fischer became the 11th women’s basketball player in program
history to earn All-America accolades. She was also the sixth
Saint to be named CAC Player of the Year and the second in as many
seasons. Fischer led the CAC in scoring, three-point shooting and
minutes played while ranking second in assists and free throw
shooting, and was also seventh in steals and 10th in rebounding.
She scored in double-figures 23 times on the year and at
least 20 points in 10 games, including a career-high 31 against
Catholic while posting seven double-doubles.
Anna Macedonia, Sr., Women’s Swimming
Individually, Macedonia won the 50 freestyle to set a CAC
Championship mark and earn an NCAA provisional ‘B’
time, won the 100 backstroke to break the league record and post an
automatic NCAA ‘A’ time and won the 100 freestyle to
break her third CAC Championship meet record an earn another NCAA
‘B’ time. She also teamed to win both the 200 and
400 freestyle relays, both of them program records. Macedonia led
off the 200 medley relay team that finished third overall and
posted a Marymount record with a time. At nationals, Macedonia
garnered Honorable Mention All-America honors with a 14th place
finish in the 100 backstroke. She also finished 27th in the 100
freestyle and 29th in the 50 freestyle.
Linda McMahon Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award
Nick Ryerson, Jr., Men’s Golf
Ryerson posted perfect 4.0 grade point average with a major in
business. A two-time CAC Scholar-Athlete, he helped his
program to one of the best seasons in program history.
Katelyn Fischer, Jr., Women’s Basketball
Fischer posted a 3.972 grade point average with a major in
business. She was an All-CAC performer, CAC Player of the Year, and
Honorable Mention All-American along with earning Capital One
Bank/CoSIDA First Team Academic All District honors.
James Shelton Award
Julie Tomesheski, Sr., Women’s Basketball
The James Shelton award is presented to the person who personifies
the positive nature, loyalty, team-first attitude, and commitment
to Marymount for which James Shelton has always been known. Senior
Julie Tomesheski could be seen on the sidelines of multiple teams
events, running the Special Olympics basketball tournament and was
also active in campus ministry and served as a resident
advisor.
