Marymount University inducted its seventh Athletics Hall of Fame
class on Saturday, May 12. Four former Saints standouts were
enshrined, including men’s lacrosse’s Matt Murray,
women’s lacrosse’s Rachel Sybor, women’s
basketball’s Violaine Romans-Murray and multi-sport athlete
Patty Wimsatt Myler.
Matt Murray
’99, Men’s Lacrosse
Marymount men’s lacrosse has been known to produce phenomenal
goalkeepers since the program’s inception in 1992. Matt
Murray is no exception and his name can be found strewn about the
NCAA, Capital Athletic Conference and Saints record books.
A three-time All-CAC selection, Murray was a first team honoree in
1997 while garnering second team accolades in both 1998 and 1999.
He is currently ranked second all-time at Marymount in career
saves, save percentage and goals-against average.
On the national stage, Murray’s numbers stand up just as
impressively. He finished his career 11th all-time in NCAA Division
III in minutes played, 13th in career saves and 17th in
goals-against average.
Violaine
Romans-Murray ’94, Women’s
Basketball
A two-sport student-athlete at Marymount, Violaine Romans-Murray
starred on the hardwood as the Saints became one of the most
dominant women’s basketball programs in the nation. After an
already stellar beginning to her collegiate career, she put
together one of the most decorated senior seasons in program
history.
A three-time All-CAC selection, Romans-Murray was named the CAC
Player of the Year, Honorable Mention Kodak All-America, First Team
All-CAC and First Team VaSID All-State as a senior. The Saints won
their fourth-straight CAC championship, second consecutive NCAA
scoring title and reached the NCAA Sweet 16 in back-to-back
seasons.
Romans-Murray was also the first Saint to play professionally,
signing a contract with Kavigal Sports in Nice, France, after
graduation. She also played two years of volleyball while at
Marymount.
Rachel Sybor
’05, Women’s Lacrosse
Not exclusive to the men’s side, Marymount’s
women’s goalkeepers have proved to be some of the best in the
nation as well. Rachel Sybor can attest, putting together the top
career and one of the best seasons between the pipes in MU program
history.
Named the Capital Athletic Conference Unsung Hero in 2003, Sybor
went on to produce a prolific career on the field. She was named
First Team All-CAC in 2005 en route to picking up IWLCA First Team
All-Region and VaSID First Team All-State honors as well.
Sybor closed out her career as Marymount’s all-time leader in
career saves per game and goals-against average. Off the field, she
was named a CAC scholar-athlete four-straight times.
Patty Wimsatt
Myler ’66, Women’s Basketball, Field Hockey and
Tennis
Representing the pre-NCAA era, Patty Wimsatt Myler was a true
pioneer of athletics at Marymount. A three-sport athlete, Myler
lettered in basketball, field hockey and tennis while also serving
as the assistant manager for the swimming team.
Averaging over 15 points a game on the hardwood, Myler’s
basketball squad defeated local powerhouses Georgetown and American
University. Also excelling outdoors, the field hockey team beat
Maryland during her tenure in Arlington.
Off the field of play Myler was a true ambassador for the college,
serving as the president of the Booster Club in 1965 and was the
president of the Athletic Association in 1966. She was honored with
the Mother Butler Gold Medal in 1966, awarded to the recipient with
greatest devotion to the ideals of Marymount.
