St. Mary's sophomore guard ALEX FRANZ (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons), Salisbury junior forward KYLIE HALL (Baltimore, Md./Landsdowne) and York sophomore guard APRIL SPARKMAN (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) were selected as the CAC Basketball Players of the Week for Feb. 9, 2009.
St. Mary's sophomore guard ALEX FRANZ (Catonsville, Md./Cardinal Gibbons) was named CAC Men's Basketball Player of the Week after leading the Seahawks to three wins, which guaranteed the defending conference champs a bye in the first round of the CAC playoffs and a home game in the semifinals. Franz registered 17 points, seven steals and seven assists the a victory at Salisbury to start the week. He followed up with 14 points and a game-high six helpers against Hood. Franz ended the week with a double-double fo 14 points and a career-high 13 assists in Saturday's victory over York. In averaging 15 points per game for the second-place Hawks, Franz show 16-for-30 from the field (53.3%) and 10-for-13 from the line (76.9%).
Salisbury junior forward KYLIE HALL (Baltimore, Md./Landsdowne) and York sophomore guard APRIL SPARKMAN (Walkersville, Md./Walkersville) were named the CAC Women's Basketball Co-Players of the Week after both recorded career-best performances in leading their respective teams to a pair of conference victories.
Hall helped the Sea Gulls move up to fifth place with wins over St. Mary's and Wesley, both of whom were ahead of the Gulls in the standings. Her 19 points against Wesley and 18 rebounds against St. Mary's were career high efforts. In averaging 17.5 points and 14.0 rebounds last week, Hall raised her season averages to 9.2 ppg. and 10.2 rpg.
Sparkman started the week by knocking down 16 points, including the game-winning three-point shot from the corner with 4.5 seconds left in the game, as the 12th-ranked Spartans defended home court against the defending CAC champion Mary Washington Eagles. Saturday at St. Mary's, Sparkman exploded for a career-high 24 points and grabbed nine rebounds, extending YCP's win streak to a team-record 20 games.
