September 2, 2008 CAC Announces First Player Of The Week Award Winners For 2008-09

St. Mary's field hockey senior EMILY SMITHSON (Richmond, Va./James River) , Wesley men's soccer sophomore Wesley sophomore goalkeeper NICK TALARICO (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands), York senior midfielder CHRIS PORTS (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll), Wesley women's soccer senior forward GINA ORRBEN (Hockessin, Del./A.I. DuPont), Mary Washington volleyball freshman setter KATIE SHIFLETT (Weyers Cave, Va./Fort Defiance) and Stevenson volleyball senior outside hitter ALANA ELLER (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) were selected as the CAC Players of the Week for their contributions in the first week of action in the 2008-09 season.

  

FIELD HOCKEY

St. Mary's senior midfielder EMILY SMITHSON (Richmond, Va./James River) was named the first CAC Field Hockey Player of the Week in 2008 after notching a career-high five points on two goals and an assist as the Seahawks posted a dominating 6-1 victory over Va. Wesleyan in their home and season-opener. Smithson's scoring output on Saturday nearly doubled what she did in 2007 when she finished the year with a goal and an assist.

 

MEN'S SOCCER

Wesley sophomore goalkeeper NICK TALARICO (Little Egg Harbor, N.J./Pinelands) and York senior midfielder CHRIS PORTS (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) were named the CAC Men's Soccer Co-Players of the Week after leading their respective teams to championships in road tournaments this weekend.

 Talarico was named the Most Outstanding Player after leading the Wolverines to a championship at the RMC Select Tournament. He made 10 saves in two matches, including six in a second-day shutout against host Randolph-Macon.for a 0.52 goals against average and a .909 save percentage.

Ports, seeing his first action since 2006 after missing last season with an injury, contributed five points in two matches at the VCAM/CNU Classic, including half the offense in a 2-0 triumph over 14th-ranked Virginia Wesleyan. He then assisted on the game-winning goal and contributed an insurance tally in a 4-1 decision over host Christopher Newport. 

 

WOMEN'S SOCCER

Wesley senior forward GINA ORRBEN (Hockessin, Del./A.I. DuPont) was named the CAC Women's Soccer Player of the Week after leading Wesley to the championship of the Wolverine Soccer Classic and earning Tournament MVP honors in the process. Orrben scored a goal in both tournament matches,, including the game-winner against the Neumann. In the process, she moved into ninth place all-time at Wesley with 38 points and seventh with 17 career goals.

 

VOLLEYBALL

Mary Washington freshman setter KATIE SHIFLETT (Weyers Cave, Va./Fort Defiance) and Stevenson senior outside hitter ALANA ELLER (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) were named the Capital Athletic Conference Volleyball Co-Players of the Week after leading their respective teams to three weekend victories.

Shiflett led Mary Washington to a 3-1 record at the Eastern Mennonite University Invitational this weekend. In her first four collegiate matches, Shiflett recorded 97 assists with just one ball handling error, and recorded nine kills in 11 attempts with no errors (.818 hitting %). She also added 17 digs in the Eagles' four matches.



Eller led the Mustangs with 30 kills while posting a .482 hitting percentage. She also totaled 33 digs, eight service aces and three block assists. In a 3-0 win over Wesley in the season opener, she totaled a team-high 13 kills while hitting .600 along with a team-high eight digs, four service aces and three block assists. In a 3-1 win over Washington (Md.), Eller just missed a double double, posting nine kills and 19 digs, both team highs.
