Salisbury senior infielder CODY COLLINS (Millsboro, Del./Delmar), Mary Washington senior pitcher KIRSTEN ROWELL (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon), Salisbury junior catcher LAUREN BRENNEMAN (York, Pa./Central York) York sophomore goalkeeper CHRIS COLLINS (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and St. Mary's senior midfielder LAUREN CARRIER (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) were selected as the CAC Athletes of the Week for their respective sports for March 30, 2009.
Salisbury senior infielder CODY COLLINS (Millsboro, Del./Delmar) was named the CAC Baseball Player of the Week after batting .444 (8-for-14), knocking in seven runs, scoring nine runs and leading the Sea Gulls, who are ranked ranked #2 by D3baseball.com and #19 by the ABCA, to four wins in five games against CAC rivals. Among his eight safeties were two homers and two doubles, leading to an .889 slugging percentage, and he stole a base. His best performance of the week was in Sunday's doubleheader sweep against nationally-ranked York, where he was 5-for-9 with seven runs scored and seven RBI.
Mary Washington senior pitcher KIRSTEN ROWELL (Alexandria, Va./Mount Vernon) and Salisbury junior catcher LAUREN BRENNEMAN (York, Pa./Central York) were each named the CAC Softball Players of the Week for the second time this season after leading their teams last week.
Rowell suffered a 1-0 loss to Messiah, but allowed just three hits and no walks while fanning 10. Later in the week, the UMW senior struck out 12 and allowed just one hit and no walks in a win over Gallaudet.
Brenneman batted .700 (7-for-10) with two doubles, a triple and a homer, scored eight runs and knocked in nine scores as Salisbury went 4-0 last week, including doubleheader sweeps against CAC rivals Wesley and Hood.
York sophomore goalkeeper CHRIS COLLINS
(Westminster, Md./Westminster) was named the CAC Men's
Lacrosse Player of the Week after recording a career-high 22 saves
as the Spartans threw a scare at top-ranked Salisbury in a midweek
contest, then led YCP to its first-ever win over St. Mary's.
Collins allowed 13 goals on 51 shots against the two-time defending
national champion Sea Gulls, then added 13 saves and surrendered
just five scores on 32 attempts in 59 minutes against the Sea
Hawks, who were held scoreless in the middle two periods.
SPECIAL MENTION: Wesley junior attack BRAD SMITH (Glen Burnie, Md./Old Mill) turned in his second 10-point game of the season with four goals and six assists in a win over Hood, then tied for game-high honors with four points in the Wolverines near upset of No. 2 Stevenson. For the week, he tallied seven goals and seven assists in a pair of CAC contests.
St. Mary's senior midfielder LAUREN CARRIER (Crownsville, Md./Old Mill) was named the CAC Women's Lacrosse Player of the Week after scoring 13 goals and 15 points in three games last week, including five goals and two helpers in a showdown win over nationally-ranked CAC rival Mary Washington. Carrier started the week with three goals and two draw controls in a win at Hood, then sparked the 17th-ranked Seahawks to the three-goal win over 19th-ranked UMW. She also provided five of SMC's eight scores in a weekend setback vs. fourth-ranked TCNJ. For the week, she added nine draw controls, four ground balls, 4-for-4 on free position shots and caused three turnovers.
