Hoops Halfway: Three Men's Teams Tied For First; Two-Team Race Shaping Up In Women's Standings

Hood, Mary Washington and York are tied for first in the men's standings while the women's standings show third-ranked Mary Washington with a one-game lead over Marymount as the Capital Athletic Conference reached the halfway mark of the 2007-08 basketball season Wednesday.

Hood's surprising 81-67 loss at eighth-place Salisbury, combined with York's 84-78 overtime win at home against Marymount and Mary Washington's 91-78 triumph over Villa Julie, created a logjam at the top of the CAC men's standings.

Hood fell to 6-2 in CAC play and shares first place with York and UMW.  But there's also a close chase for the fourth first-round home game as Wesley and St. Mary's are tied for fourth with a 4-4 league mark while Marymount and Villa Julie are only a game behind with a 3-5 mark.

On the women's side, Mary Washington, tied for third in this week's WBCA rankings with Thomas Moore (Ky.), survived the first seven games unscathed and hold a one-game lead over Marymount, which is among those teams receiving votes in this week's WBCA poll.  The Eagles won the first meeting of top two teams, 68-56 on Jan. 16, and will host Marymount in the rematch on Feb. 16.

York and St. Mary's are battling for third place, both with 5-3 CAC records, while Wesley and Salisbury both are a game back with 4-4 records.

The second half of the season starts Saturday (1/26) with doubleheaders at Villa Julie (vs. St. Mary's), Salisbury (vs.Mary Washington), Hood (vs. York) and Marymount (vs. Gallaudet).
