Three CAC Basketball Players Named To The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Team

Marymount women's basketball players Stephanie Witko (South Boston, Va./Hailfax), Kathleen Brown (Bethesda, Md./Whitman) and Mary Washington men's standout Justin Baker (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) were named to the 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District basketball teams, selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Witko and Baker were first-team All-District 3 selections on their respective teams and will advance to the national ballot, trying to earn a berth on the ESPN The Academic All-America squad.  Brown was a second-team choice on the All-District 3 women's squad.

Witko, who was a Second Team District Academic All American and a second team all Capital Athletic Conference player last season, leads the conference in rebounding (10.3 per game) for the second year in a row. She also averages 6.3 points, 3.4 assists and 1.6 blocks per game. She also is second in the CAC in assist to turnover ratio.  Her overall grade point average at MU is 3.99.

Brown, who has been the CAC Athlete of the Week three times this season, currently leads the conference in scoring (20.1 points per game) and field goal percentage (.615). She also averages 7.7 rebounds per game and hits on 72.6 percent of her free throws. Her overall grade point average is 3.71.

Both players are starters on the women's basketball team, which now has a record of 18-2 overall, 10-1 in the conference.

Baker, who owns a 3.67 cumulative grade-point average as a business administration graduate, was named the 2007 Capital Athletic Conference co-Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as well as UMW's Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He ranks in the top 10 in school history in scoring, and has led the Eagles to a 13-6 record this season. He is completing courses toward an MBA at Mary Washington's graduate campus.
